Personal Injury Coverage: Low-cost Homeowner’s Endorsement Pad’s Protection

Personal Injury Coverage: Low-cost Homeowner’s Endorsement Pad’s Protection

Personal Injury claims have recently been surfacing in the insurance world and many people are under the false assumption that they are automatically protected by their homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy. The simple truth is that most standard homeowner’s policies protect individuals from bodily injury and property damages, but do not provide coverage for personal injury.

So, what exactly is personal injury? The Insurance Services Office defines personal injury as injury arising out of one or more of the following offenses:

  • False arrest, detention or imprisonment;
  • Malicious prosecution;
  • The wrongful eviction from, wrongful entry into, or invasion of the right of private occupancy of a room, dwelling or premises that a person occupies, committed by or on behalf of its owner, landlord or lessor;
  • Oral or written publication, in any manner, of material that slanders or libels a person or organization or disparages a person's or organization's goods, products or services; or
  • Oral or written publication, in any manner, of material that violates a person's right of privacy.

In general terms, personal injury could arise from something as simple as your teenager tweeting about a classmate. In the age of technology, we are no longer required to be face to face to be accused of slanderous remarks. A Facebook post, a Tweet, or a comment on any social media platform for that matter, can generate a personal injury liability claim.

Personal Injury perils don’t only exist through social media platforms either. There have been instances where speaking out at a city council meeting or school function have resulted in a law suit. Evicting a tenant or entering the premises of a tenant occupied dwelling that you own can result in a personal injury claim as well.

Adding a personal injury liability endorsement to your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy will protect you from any emotional damages that you may be sued for. This additional coverage is relatively cheap and usually only adds a few dollars to your monthly bill. Because the benefit-cost ratio is so high, it is recommended to include this coverage on your homeowner’s insurance policy.
